Project SOAR

Simon Kenton Council’s

Conservation Committee

Presents:

Project S.O.A.R.

Save Our American Resources

An Ecology—Conservation Weekend Event

featuring

Service & Learning

at Camp Otter Run

In partnership with experts from

The Nature Conservancy

September 28, 29 & 30 2007

Project SOAR began as a Boy Scouts of America special conservation emphasis in 1971 to continue the tradition of BSA conservation service—the Conservation Good Turns of previous decades. Project SOAR is an ongoing emphasis encouraging Scouts to participate in community beautification and conservation projects. Look for more project SOAR opportunities in 2008. The Nature Conservancy is a nonprofit conservation organization specializing in preservation of rare habitats.

Event Registration opens at 7:00 pm Friday at Camp Otter Run north of Marysville (Route 33 NW from Columbus—find directions to this council camp on the council website).  Activities end by noon Sunday.

Who should attend?  Sea Scout Ships, Venturing Crews, older Boy Scout patrols, and registered individual youth and adults are all welcome.

Registration will be limited to eight work crews of 10 youth each. All participants must be 13 years old or older. All youth will qualify for at least six service hours.

Cost?   The early-bird cost for the weekend is $15; and $20 if registering after August 31, 2007

The fee covers camping, food, programs, a special patch (the restricted council 2007 SOAR patch). Meals included—two breakfasts, Saturday lunch & dinner, and two cracker barrels.

What to bring?  All participants should be prepared for all-weather camping in personal or unit tents. Bring work clothes, sturdy boots, and gloves for service projects Saturday.

What is the program?  ALL participants will give voice to conservation through service. Field projects for habitat stewardship will be completed on natural areas near BSA’s Camp Otter Run. Projects may include tree planting, invasive species removal, and additional stewardship activities. Evening programs Friday and Saturday will offer additional learning opportunities for participants. Topics will include environmental awareness and conservation practices.

Register early!!  We need a head count for camping and for meals, and we need to get additional information to you before the event.  Registration deadline is September 15.

For additional information about the weekend, contact Conservation Committee Chair Jackie Brown  jjbrown@insight.rr.com or call the Simon Kenton Service Center at 614-436-7200.
